My husband and two friends have experienced this error.
They had fully functional connections to the Internet, Skype, etc. They could log on with characters parked in our Guild Hall, Nolani Academy, and so forth. They were not able to log on to characters parked in Kamadan or Lion's Arch. This has persisted throughout the day. They have three different systems, different graphics cards, etc.
My husband took a character who was functional and moved him to LA. Then he used "character select" to log out and log back in immediately as the same character. He was successful. He was then able to log in to the character who was stuck in LA.
Post hoc, ergo propter hoc, I know, but there are the facts.
My friend attempted the same process, taking a character to Kamadan, using "character select" to log out and logging back in immediately as the same character. He could successfully log in as the character he moved, but he could not log in as any other character who was stuck in Kamadan. He could, however, log in as a character stuck in Lion's Arch and move him after attempting this solution. He was unable to log in to either Kamadan or LA previously, so he saw some improvement.
Another friend tried the same system and could not move any character in Kamadan or LA. She was able to move to Kamadan, log out with "character select", and log back in as that character in Kamadan. She was not able to log in as any other character stuck in Kamadan or LA, however, so this process is not 100% successful, even on a three-person trial level.

I get this every time I try and log onto just one of my characters, who is in Kamadan. Everyone else I can log onto fine.
Rather annoying, that's the only character I haven't yet done the CNY quests with >.>

While I was getting error 50 trying to go to American Shing Jea, I was able to switch to international districts and get there.

i couldn't get on due to error 50 for the 3 pst event. Just now during the 6pst event my entire system locked up(except for mouse pointer) at about 6:05. I let it sit there for about 5 minutes to see if it would start responding. It didn't, so I hard rebooted and tried to get back in by 6:15, but got error 50 again. Not sure if the system lockup was bad luck/timing or somehow related to this.

Same problem here with a character that had been in Nightfall. All others logged in fine. Many allies reported the same problem logging on characters that were left in a Nightfall city.

Three characters located in prophecies outposts for me. 050, logs in fine, etc... Could be more, did not try with characters that are not able to travel to shin jea yet.
On same connection, another account works just fine, no problems with any character.

Started on two characters at same time, whilst trying to switch from jp dist to american... locked both characters in district, unable to leave, yet still able to play nine rings.
anet's answer to everyone trying to switch dists at once? my guess

I was getting this same error yesterday quite a bit, mine occurred typically around the event times though. I would be out doing the Festival quests, and wanting to map travel back to Shing Jei Monastary. When I would do so it would say Error reconnecting to server Error 50, but it would not be a standard disconnect with hte reconnect window, it would say this in the chat dialog box. A very new error. Hopefully they can get that situation sorted, or maybe they just have scaled back the servers so they are unable to handle the load =\

I've got the same problem with "Character A" in Eye of The North. I can log in on all other characters. I mapped "Character B" there, logged out. I tried logging in with "Character A," again with no luck. Tried changing from AD1 to ID1 with "Character B" to see if that would fix it - didn't. I also re-booted my computer, no luck with that either. So, "Character A" sits in limbo. And I'm a sad panda.

It's broken in a lot of places. I got the error zoning from the Command Post into Sunspear Sanctuary. Now I can't log in with that character. But other characters get the same error when trying to go pretty much anywhere that I want to go. I can get to the guild hall and to some other random outposts.
